En 1989 Brewster Kahle inventó el primer sistema de publicación a través de Internet: WAIS (Wide Area Information Server). Era un sistema Open Source. Después de él vendrían, en 1991 y casi simultáneamente, Gopher y la World Wide Web que en 1992 Tim Berners-Lee y Robert Caillou presentaron en el Xerox PARC. WAIS se ideó para solucionar el aislamiento del investigador.
